Quarterly Meeting Recap – July 22, 2025
Thank you to all who attended our last quarterly meeting, especially our newest neighbors on Commonwealth, Creighton, Rollins and Woodland!
We had insightful discussion thanks to many city reps joining us. Here are the key highlights and updates from across the community:
Community Safety Updates
Officer Kelvin Moore, our CMPD Community Coordinator, provided crime trend insights—highlighting that violent crimes are significantly less prevalent than property-related crimes.
New Resource: Fusus Security Camera Registry
Residents and businesses can voluntarily register security cameras to help police investigations.
Note: Registration does not grant live access; it simply makes police aware of nearby cameras to aid in faster investigation of an incident.
Register here: connectcharlotte.org/camera-registration
For non-emergency questions, Officer Moore is available during business hours: kelvin.moore@cmpd.org
City Updates: Tree Ordinance & Canopy Protection
Representatives from Urban Forestry shared important information affecting homeowners:
Two rules aim to protect Charlotte’s tree canopy and combat the heat island effect.
Frontage Requirement: Trees must be protected or planted for every 40 feet of street frontage.
Heritage Trees (trees native to NC over 30”) are the primary scope. Planned removal can incur city fees of up to $765 ($265 Permit Fee and $500 Mitigation Fee), not including removal.
Permits can be requested online, and many tree companies handle the process for homeowners.
Future programs may offer financial assistance for canopy preservation.
The engaging discussion made it clear this is NOT a simple topic. Find more information at Urban Forestry’s website.
Code Enforcement Reminders
Alex Harley is one of our area Code Enforcement Officers. He addressed common concerns:
Code Enforcement covers nuisance, minimal housing, and zoning (excludes new construction).
Use 311 to report concerns or ask questions. (Let's also just be neighborly and consider the needs of others...)
CDOT handles right-of-way signage; stormwater violations are routed to the appropriate teams.
(Let's also just be neighborly and consider the needs of others...)
Community Events & Happenings
Pizza Truck Night in June was a hit! Another social event is in the works.
Halloween Parade planning is underway. Resurrection Church is also planning a Family Night.
Next Neighborhood Clean-Up: Saturday, August 23, 8 am. Coffee and donuts will be provided! Contact Bobby Simon, Resurrection Church’s Director of Outreach, at (716) 698-2059 with any questions.
Resurrection Church is considering a fall event after a successful May block party.
Commonwealth Forest... the Exploration Continues
Although not an official city park, the neighborhood is exploring community grant opportunities to enhance and protect this beloved green space.
